Salary offers will be made within the posted range. Placement within the range will be determined based on your similar work experience. The Port considers work experience to be similar if the scope and level of responsibility of your prior positions match the job being offered.
Some of what you'll be doing:


  • You will design and/or evaluate Port facility and infrastructure systems for small and major works projects as the designated Designer of Record for the Port of Seattle.
  • You will lead and manage the review of all drawings and calculations within discipline as part of the Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) process. You will also lead coordination with other design team members, necessary internal stakeholders, and consultants throughout design and construction phases in developing design documentation.
  • You will identify technical design project risks, develop mitigation plans, establish clear communication channels and escalate effectively and appropriately.
  • You will manage and perform design support during construction phase by conducting site visits, reviewing contractor submittals, responding to Request for Information (RFIs), and provide technical advice during construction.
  • You will perform and lead facilities and infrastructure engineering tasks as the owner's representative for Waterfront divisions and others as required.
  • You will lead efforts to plan, assess, evaluate, and manage facility system technical information, including asset condition, system characteristics, system demands & capacities, and operational impacts.
  • You will coordinate with maintenance, planning, capital development, and operational staff for system evaluations.
  • You will provide permitting support reviews, such as for the Airport Building Department, Stormwater Utility, or other permitting authorities.
  • You will collaborate with Project Managers, Program Design Managers, Planners, and operational staff in developing scope, design and construction budgets, design and construction schedules, permitting requirements, and design fee estimates from project planning through project completion.
  • You will participate in procurement activities for consultants and contractors, including scope development, requests for information, proposal reviews, interviews, and selection.

    Who you are:

    • Experienced - You have ten (10) years of experience in engineering design. A bachelor's degree in engineering may be substituted for four (4) years of experience. You also have a Professional Engineering license in the State of Washington.
    • Desired - We hope you have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. We hope you have ten (10) years of experience related to facilities and building construction.

    • Expertise - You possess expert knowledge in engineering/architectural design principles, including local and state codes, regulations, and standards related to aviation and maritime activities. You have a foundational understanding of project management principles, including budgeting and scheduling, and are familiar with project delivery and contracting methods. You also have advanced expertise in a specialized subsystem or sub-discipline and are proficient in relevant analysis and design software, along with a basic understanding of drafting and modeling principles.
    • Efficient Communicator - You possess effective communication skills including ability to convey complex and technical details to various stakeholders, write technical reports, write brief summaries, lead and facilitate meetings, and deliver technical presentations.
    • Analytical - You demonstrate a strong focus on analytical decision making and possess the ability to make strong, balanced arguments when weighing the strengths and weaknesses of solutions. You can prioritize multiple projects simultaneously while handling large volumes of work.
    • Relationship-Builder - You possess a customer-centric approach in developing and maintaining working relationships. You can build credibility with Port stakeholders, understanding their needs and concerns, and actively seek out opportunities to secure new projects or assignments.
    • Collaborator - You demonstrate a continuous learning mindset, ability to lead and serve others, capable of delegating responsibilities while providing oversight, accountability, team support, and mentorship. You also demonstrate ownership for execution.

      What else you need to know:

      • Driver's License - You will need a valid Washington State Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to travel locally to project sites.
      • Work Schedule - Your normal work schedule will be Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role within the discretion and approval of your Manager. You may be required to work during emergencies.
      • Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid remote/in-office setting at Management's discretion with occasional exposure to all types of weather conditions during site visits and field work.
      • Washington State Residency Requirement - Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
      • Safety Requirements - You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
      • Security Requirements - As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
      • Security Requirements - You will also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 30 days of hire.
      • Security Requirements - As the successful candidate, you must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within the first three months of employment.
